Roland’s Synth History Illustrated in New Book, ‘R Is For Roland’

Japanese electronic music gear manufacturer Roland Corporation has published an in-depth look at its classic products in a new 384-page book, which hits shelves today. Released in limited quantities, R Is For Roland, details 23 of the company’s most legendary hardware innovations from 1973 to 1987, including the TR-808 drum machine, the Jupiter-8 synth and more.

Teaming up to create lasting portraits of these powerfully influential machines, author Michal Matlak (alongside editor Florian Anwander) and illustrator/photographer Tabita Hub also captured exclusive interviews and personal insights from electronic music pioneers like Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin, Moby, Modeselektor, Lee Scratch Perry, and many more.

“I think that there’s a lot of love about these machines,” Hub said. “I’m a complete layman. I don’t have any musical skills, but they’re accessible somehow: they look like little spaceships — and I thought it would be really fun and special to work with these instruments.”

A UK University is Awarding Richie Hawtin an Honorary Doctorate

Just after wrapping up his North American CNTRL tour that hit major college campuses coast-to-coast, Richie Hawtin is set to go back to school once again. On July 18, the techno icon will be awarded an honorary doctorate from the UK’s University of Huddersfield.

As Resident Advisor first discovered, the Berlin-based Minus boss is among eight recipients to receive the honor this year, alongside “distinguished people from the media, science, enterprise, politics and the arts.”

Hawtin’s connection to the university comes from his association to Dr. Nick Bougaieff, a member of the Popular Music Studies Research Group whose doctoral thesis focused on minimal techno, and specifically the live performance methods from the 2010-11 Plastikman Live tour.

This upcoming award looks to be right in line with Hawtin, who has always applied an intellectual approach to his craft. See the full photo lineup of 2015 honorees on the university’s website, where Hawtin is awesomely the odd man out.

Tomorrowland Adds More Names to 2015’s Techno Lineup

Tomorrowland Adds More Names to 2015’s Techno Lineup

When Tomorrowland began announcing its 2015 lineup name-by-name, one of the early reveals was German techno don Sven Väth. No stranger to Tomorrowland, the Cocoon boss is bringing back his curated stage to Boom, Belgium, and now his full support cast has been locked in. Needless to say, this is where techno and house heads will be setting up residence on Saturday, July 25.

As previously announced, the Cocoon stage will be a ‘vinyl only’ showcase, led by Väth’s lasting passion for two turntables and a mixer. The selectors who’ll be digging deep include Ellum Audio boss Maceo Plex, regular Cocoon accomplice Seth Troxler and acid house innovator Josh Wink, plus Belgian resident Fred Hush and two of Germany’s finest, Dana Ruh and Markus Fix.

Earlier this week, Tomorrowland also announced the lineups that Jamie Jones and Richie Hawtin are bringing to their respective stages. Then there’s whatever UK titans Carl Cox and Dave Clarke have planned. If mainstage sounds are more to your taste, Armin van Buuren, Hardwell, Avicii, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike and David Guetta will all be there too.
